Move. I focus all my energy on lifting my arm, but nothing happens. I feel like I’m looking around my room, but my eyelids won’t open. My heart races as I push harder, urging my muscles to react…but they don’t. I hear the television in the background and know that I am lying in my bed. I know my husband is sleeping beside me and that the sun hasn’t risen. My mind is awake. I am awake. But I am frozen. Why isn’t my body responding? What’s happening to me?
I scream. I inhale deeply and scream again; nothing. I can’t speak. Fear takes over, and I order my body to thrash. I imagine my arms flailing and my legs kicking at the air. Move, dammit! Anything, please! Just a twitch, a small movement or blink. I’m awake! I’m awake! My heart beats faster as I strain to communicate with my body…but nothing happens. My mind is in a panic, but my body remains still.
A loud creaking sound catches my attention and my mind calms down. What was that? I look to the side and see the door. The bedroom door has opened. Even though I can’t turn my head, I know my husband is still beside me. How did the door open? I start to breathe erratically as I watch the door open wider.
In the darkness I hear whispers. They begin soft but continue to get louder. Something’s coming. Wake up! With all my strength I try to move my left arm so I can warn my husband. Please wake up we have to get up! Still nothing. I swallow hard and try to speak. Not even a sigh can escape my lips. I look to the side and see a large figure standing at our bedroom door.
I scream, though no one can hear. The whispers surround me now, as I command my body to move. I try to twist and jerk but nothing happens. I’m trapped inside my body. This isn’t a nightmare; this is real. Move! I begin to cry, even though there are no tears. Please…I’m awake. I’m awake… I shut my eyes tightly. My heart aches from stifled sobs. Nothing is working.
The whispers stop. Suddenly the room is silent. I take a deep breath, and exhale slowly before I open my eyes. I gasp. I’m face to face with the intruder. I cannot see his face. But he is floating above me. Move, move, move! I beg, but I’m still frozen. As the intruder lifts his large unnatural hand to touch my cheek…
